In 2006 a collective awakening took place across the globe: all right thinking governments and scientists finally agreed that global warming is real, it's happening and it's here - NOW. Weak jokes about penguins in swimsuits and ill-informed comments on a cold day have been assigned to the waste basket for good.
All anyone has to do is watch the news. Hurricanes, typhoons and massive deadly droughts stare out from the TV telling a story that for many of us, is just a story; for those who live and die in such harsh conditions - it is bitter reality and the irony is that the majority of the world do not have the means to produce CO2. Hurricane Katrina was probably the first in recent history to hit a developed country. The US suddenly had third world needs in its own back yard. Cyclone Larry battered Queensland, Australia whilst drought ridden Indonesia fought off savage blazes bent on destruction. Antarctica and the Arctic are shrinking so much more rapidly than had first been feared that the once permanent maps will soon be relics of a former time. There is no doubt about it - global warming has picked up speed and we need to try to gently apply the brakes.
Many people feel a true sense of helplessness about the environment and yet we can all make a difference. This is one issue that is non-partisan, secular and classless. From recycling everything you can think of to walking to the shops instead of driving, we all know we can play a part. The question is, will we? Is walking and not driving going to make a difference? Will using a proper shopping bag instead of plastic carrier bag matter? Yes. By stopping that CO2 from pumping into the air, stopping that plastic bag from being buried for eternity in the earth (let alone the chemicals and energy used to make it) you are helping.
So how can business help?
Modern international business relationships and the ever shrinking globe means that most successful businesses have times when they need to speak to someone in another country. Sometimes these meetings are short and often involve only a handful of the most influential people within the organisation. Videoconferencing is an ideal way to conduct most of these meetings. It is not only cost and time effective (saving as it does on the flight time and money but also the accommodation expenses) but also environmentally effective too. No-one knows if we can halt the seemingly out of control global warming, but we can at least try to stop it from getting worse. If we want to know what fresh air is like in our own back yards and we want our lungs to be clean, we can help.
To see just how much CO2 emission you can save by walking to the shops or by having a videoconference simply use our tool below. Our belief in protecting the environment is such that a co-founder of Eyenetwork is also a Director of a non-profit organisation Carbon Disclosure Project: a secretariat for the world's largest institutional investor collaboration on the business implications of climate change. We are committed to a better environment for our planet and to protecting the clean air and beautiful land we live in.
